God has blessed me tremendously with an amazing husband, Doug, and two gorgeous little boys, Gavin and Joey. It has always been a dream of mine to have a large family but God may have other plans. I had a series of 6 consecutive early miscarriages when trying for baby #2. We are currently trying for baby #3 after our 7th miscarriage. I am faithful that God's plan is perfect, even when I am not happy about it. I love comments and meeting new followers so please don't be shy!

Hello 100!

Well... not 100 exactly but my weight, as of today, starts with a 1.  I can't remember the last time that was the case.  It certainly was before I had babies and maybe even before I was married!  Either way, I am excited!  Down a total of 27 pounds since June.

A lot of people have asked me how I am losing weight so fast and I am going to tell you exactly what I am doing.

1. I keep track of my calories.  Until June, I never paid any attention to calories or my portions.  I probably ate and drank enough for two people without even knowing it!   I found My Fitness Pal and learned that tracking my calories was actually easy.  I started reading labels of the crap I had been eating and started making better choices.  I am not eating cardboard and plain lettuce!  I eat normal food and I have eaten fast food at least once a week.  It is just a game of numbers!  I like to win so I watch those numbers!  If I eat a cheeseburger, then I have to be vigilant about what I eat the rest of the day.

2. I sweat.  Daily.   When I first decided to lose weight, I googled what the best exercise was to lose weight.  I found some stellar advice.  Turns out, the best exercise is the exercise you will do.  So, I bought a treadmill.  I had done other kinds of exercise over the years but I would always slack off when I thought that I might be pregnant for fear of causing some sort of complication or miscarriage.  So I decided that walking is something that I will do now and will keep doing through a pregnancy (perhaps less vigorous).  Everyday I walk for about 90 minutes.  The amount of calories I burn varies but it is usually around 750.

3. I found motivation.  Most people would think that wanting to lose weight is motivation enough.  Thinking about being slim and looking good in fashionable clothes is really easy to do while watching TV and eating Doritos.  I used TV to motivate me.  I don't get much time to watch adult situation TV dramas and I figured out that I could do that using ear buds and either my phone or my husband's Kindle without young impressionable ears having any clue that I wasn't watching Blue's Clues.  I found a TV series that caught my attention and only was allowed to watch it while on the treadmill.  I loved how every episode would end with a bit of a cliff hanger so I would really look forward to my next workout.  I am now watching Lost and already getting concerned about what to watch next!  This might be tough to top!  I am completely open to any suggestions!

That is really it!  I work hard for every pound I lose.  I would love to one day get to my goal weight of 150, but for now, I'll take it one cycle at a time.   For those that remember this post, I am getting closer to this!!!

If you have any questions, ask me in the comments and I'll spill it.  I'm an open book!

Wordless Wednesday: Project Drop Pounds

I still have a ways to go but I am pretty proud of how my hard work is starting to show!  Since the first picture I have probably lost between 25 and 30 pounds!  In TTC news... there isn't any.  Despite a most pretty chart, there is nothing to report from pee stick land.

I hope you all have a great Wednesday!

Day 27: Cycle Beads and App

If you are just starting out on your journey to a family, cycle beads and the cycle beads online app can help you see when you might be ovulating.  These beads and this app is really a good set up for couples who are just starting out and not ready to start with using ovulation tests, fertility monitors, or formal charting of basal body temps.  It is a good way to take the relaxed approach.

It is a fantastic tool to track your periods when you are hoping to see if your cycles are consistent.  It will tell you how likely it is that you will become pregnant or not based on where you are in your cycle. Since it can take several months to determine if you have a regular cycle, I personally don't recommend it as a birth control method unless you are okay with a surprise pregnancy.

If you are interested in learning more about cycle beads check out their website.  They also have a self screening assessment to determine if you are a good candidate for cycle beads and their charting app!

Would you like to win a set of regular cycle beads AND a one year subscription to the iCycleBeads Online web application, enter below using the rafflecopter!  This giveaway is open worldwide!

A Purse, a Potty, and a Pee Stick

A couple of weeks ago I wanted to go to a local book store to get a book on Gluten Free cooking.  Taking two kids with attention spans of a gnat was risky.  They did have a kids section but of course they have games, and toys at the eye level of a toddler so I was screwed.  I managed to grab my book and tell the boys that they could each pick out a book.  There was kicking, screaming and carrying on when I wasn't going to give in to the totally overpriced puzzles and toys that we already have plenty of at home.  Gavin finally complied and walked over to the Olivia books.  Our whole family likes that show Olivia.  Granted it is a little estrogen heavy for the kids but... eh... what a little theatrical and dramatic overload going to hurt?

Gavin picked up a book that was large, pink, and shaped like a handbag.  It wasn't coming home with us.  I used my ninja mom skills to convince him that Olivia opening a lemonade stand was worthy of so many ooohs and ahhhs that the pink handbag book didn't stand a chance.  After paying for our books, I decided that getting some coffee for the road was a must.

Since the nearby Starbucks (AKA Ninja Mom Fuel) was without a drive thru (which makes it much less powerful to a mom with two gnats... I mean kids) I went to the coffee stand in the book store.  Gavin saw the juices and kid friendly drinks and I was easily convinced.  After all, I did rob him of that very fashionable handbag.  I put a  vitamin water into two cups with ice and let the boys slurp it down at the same rate I was chugging my iced coffee.

Then, I decided that it would be fun to let the boys see the critters at Petsmart.  We walked up and down the isles admiring the creepy crawly critters and the ones that swam and even a few furry ones.  Then, we piled back into the car and were on our way home.

We were about halfway home when I heard the words every mom dreads.

"Mom.  I have to go potty!"

What was I thinking letting Gavin have a big cup of fruit flavored water?  Joey is still in diapers so he can pee freely but Gavin?  What was I thinking?!  I told him to hang on and then assessed the situation.  I had basically two options: a fast food restaurant or a truck stop.  I weighed the two establishment on a few qualities and oddly enough I decided that the truck stop would be an easy in and out and I wouldn't feel obligated to purchase anything.  After all... it is like a rest stop.  As we pulled into the parking lot and I was getting the boys out of their car seats, I was nearly knocked over by the cigarette smoke.  Whatever.  I was in a hurry and by the look on Gavin's face, so was he.  So we get inside the restaurant/lobby door and the bathroom is thankfully just inside the door.  Gavin rushes to the handicapped stall (so that we can all fit in there) and reaches for and grabs the toilet seat.  Yeah... it happened.  Full 5 finger grab to the public truck stop toilet seat.  After my initial freak out I took a deep breath and thought, "I am so glad I am not really OCD like Jo @ BumBumGerms or I would toally be needing a wire brush right now."  (If you like to have a giggle or two her posts always do it for me.)  Then, we managed to get the deed done and wash his hands all while I am somehow managing to keep Joey from reaching out, grabbing and ingesting truck stop potty germs.  On the way out Gavin spots the "insert a quarter and weigh yourself scale."  Then, before I can stop him he is touching all over it.  Back to the sinks.  At this point, I am dying to get out of the bathroom but also feeling like I need to pee too.  I make the executive mommy decision to hold it and get the heck out of there.  I am still waiting on my T-Shirt that reads, "I survived a Truck Stop bathroom with children!"

It is days like that that I find myself questioning my unwavering desire to have another baby.  This last cycle was a bust.  The good news is that my BabyHopes HPTs worked great!  I wished they would have worked great and been positive, but thankfully I have a few left for this cycle.  But, if I do ever get to add to this family, I am considering either only traveling in an RV or withholding all beverages until 10 minutes before we will be home.

Have you ever found yourself with nature calling in an unnaturally disgusting place?  Tell me about it!!!

Day 3: Wondfo Pregnancy Tests

I am an addict.  There is no meeting for my addiction (unless you count my trying to conceive groups) but I can't seem to resist the urge to pee on things.  Unfortunately peeing on things can become an expensive habit so I am always sure to have some cheep but sensitive test strips on hand.   And, you can pee on them two at a time if you want when you have 20 of them!

The tests did not expire in 07.  This image is from Amazon.com
All you need to do to enter to win these tests is to answer this poll.  It takes about 3 seconds!  Ironically the same amount of time it takes to dip one of these tests!  Good luck!

Giveaway: OvaCue Fertility Monitor with Vaginal Sensor

As many of you know, I was given the opportunity to review an OvaCue fertility monitor with vaginal sensor!  So many of you expressed an interest in a giveaway that I had to figure out how to make that happen.  Not only did I get you a giveaway, I did one better!  I managed to turn this into an even cooler giveaway event by inviting my dear friend Jayme at The Tater Twins to join me!  What does this mean?  This means TWO monitors are going to be sent out to TWO lucky winners!!

There is a tiny twist that could make this really exciting!  If you share this giveaway with your friends, blog readers, or trying to conceive buddy groups and they use your email address* as who referred them, if they win, you do too!!  So not only do all of your entries count as a possibility to win, every single entry of each person that you send, also means an entry for you as well!  So spread the word!

In the event the winner was not referred by anyone, a second winner will be selected for the second monitor!

Secret to my Success

What makes a woman who has been trying for 20 cycles finally get pregnant?  Who knows.  I hadn't spent much time using supplements, but when I had the opportunity to try some new things this cycle, I was all for it!

I had been having trouble the last several cycles with not having very good... ahem... CM at the right times.  If you aren't familiar with the abbreviation CM, it stands for cervical mu...mu.... muc...us.  While hard for me to say even in my head, it is something that women need in order to be fertile.  It gives the sperm a good medium and food source to hang out in until the egg pops out.  So, I decided it was a good time to use FertileCM, a supplement available at Fairhaven Health.

I took the supplement 3 times a day, as suggested and drank the recommended amount of water as well.  I could tell fairly quickly that it did seem to improve the quality and amount of CM I was producing!

Also, this cycle, Doug started taking FertilAid for Men 3 times a day.  The most noteworthy effect it seem to have was it seems to have increase his libido.  Several months ago he did have a semen analysis and his numbers were good, but it is possible that this supplement is what helped his swimmers meet my egg!

Then, just because I had heard so much about people having success with using it, I finally decided it was time to try pre-seed.  It was actually not nearly as awkward or uncomfortable as I had imagined it would be.  I simply applied it prior to the night's events and viola!

So, do I know if one or all of these supplements were what did the trick?  No.  Will I recommend them to anyone who is having difficulty conceiving?  Without a doubt!

If you have any questions or want more detail about the supplements, my experience using them, etc. Please feel free to drop me a line or find me at my online group at ttccommunity.com by clicking HERE.

Disclaimer- I was provided the supplements at no cost, but this did, in no way, sway or change my opinion.  All comments and thoughts are my own! Also, I am not a doctor even if I would look really cute in a white coat.  I cannot give medical advice and you should consult with your doctor regarding any concerns or questions regarding supplements.

Please Pray

Now what?  Don't get me wrong, I am excited!  But I feel like I should be doing something.  Yesterday I spent my whole day hunched over pee sticks trying to catch them in the right light.  Today, it is there.  It is there, right?  I know it isn't dark, but it is a start.  I will probably take a test everyday for a while so I can see lines get darker.  Hopefully!

I haven't been in this position in so long I don't know how to react.  I don't have the immediate joy and excitement that first time moms get.  I am hopeful.  I am happy.  I am scared though too.

Doug reminded me this morning that this baby isn't ours.  This baby belongs to God and that He will do with it as He wills.  I am thankful that today I get to carry this child.  I hope that tomorrow I get to carry it still, and that there are many more tomorrows after that.

I am so thankful for all of your support and prayers and would appreciate if you would continue.  You know how people say that there is light at the end of the tunnel?   I feel like I have been waiting in a very long line to start  my way through that tunnel in hopes of seeing the light at the end of it.  Your prayers and support will help to light the way.
Thank you so very much!

The First Step is Admitting It.

I love a good old fashioned pee stick festival.  I really do!  Some people drink.  Some people smoke.  I pee on things.  I crave it all cycle and then, like most addictions, I reach a point where I realize that I am powerless over my addiction.  Today is that day.  It isn't fun anymore.  I just do it because I have to.

I took a test yesterday.  Negative.

I took a test last night.  Something???  Maybe???

But something doesn't look right.  The line isn't in the right spot.  All that does is encourage me to use two more tests to see what, if anything, that test means.

It means that it was a faulty test.  Totally negative.

This morning I test again.  It looks negative.  Then about 10 minutes later, I see something.  Don't I?  The more time that passes the more I see that... dare I call it a line?

Too much time has passed.  It can't be valid.

I am easily coerced into using a First Response test by the lovely Jayme at ttccommunity with using just two words, "FRER time?"

Nothing.  I dip a cheap one too... just because...

Another stupid, shows up too late, dare I call it a line?

I want to scream but that won't make me feel any less crazy.  Maybe, I will feel more crazy if I let it show how completely messed up my brain is right now. Plus those that are chart stalking or are familiar with charting, my nice jaw dropping temp jump must have been a bit of a fever or something because I am right back down.  I am above coverline but no longer the exciting nail biting promising chart it once was.  Let's have a moment of silence for my once awe inspiring chart...

I will continue the madness.  The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.  But see, eventually I will get different result!  I am just hoping that it is this cycle.  I mean these symptoms can't be phantom symptoms!  If they are, my body must be really trying to teach me a lesson.  I haven't had this much breast tenderness since before I conceived Gavin.  I don't usually get cramps more than a day or two at the most before my period.  I have had constant cramping now for almost 4 days.  Maybe tomorrow...  Off I go to Google to see what I can find to reassure me that there is still hope.

Which Way?

I am in my 20th cycle of trying to conceive my 3rd child.  You know, when I first started trying this time around, if you would have told me that I wouldn't be sporting a big round baby bump by now I would have laughed at you.

We tried 3 rounds of clomid with a trigger.  Nothing good came of that unless you count a really emotional roller coaster of hope with long lingering HCG and false positives.  I spent way too much time watching people get congratulated over and over again about how there would be no way for a trigger to be showing up 13 days later.  I love being in the 1%... all the time.

So this is our first cycle of going au natural again.  I was pleasantly surprised to see this on day 13.

Now fast forward to yesterday.  I had a little dip in my temperature.  Now, while to many who never charted, I might sound a little crazy, but when I am 7 days past ovulation and my temp does something a little erratic, I can't help but get a little hopeful.  A dip can mean good things if the temp bounces back up.  Last night I was so excited to see if my morning temperature was going to make me smile.  Then, this morning, my temp did more than make me smile.  It made me gasp.  It jumped clear up to 99.0 degrees.  That was almost a whole degree higher than yesterday.  I thought for sure it couldn't be real.  I took my temp again.  99.2  Then again about 30 minutes later.  99.1  Then an hour later.  99.1  Then this afternoon after going shopping, eating lunch, feeling healthy with the exception of a horrible headache.  99.1

I know that it could mean nothing.  I know I could just be getting a touch of something.  But here I am somewhere between..
and

Then just to make matters worse, I have a horrible headache.  I often get headaches when I don't get enough caffeine.  Hello.  My name is Maria and I am a caffeine addict.  But today I have had a cup of coffee and a soda.  I should not be going through withdrawal.  Then this morning, as I wiped my nose, it started gushing blood.  I get it.  It is the middle of winter.  The air is dry.  Nosebleeds aren't unheard of for me.  But why, oh why does it also have to be a potential pregnancy symptom?!  Probably because no matter where I am in my cycle, I can always find this street...

If you want to come and obsess with me, I can be found over at www.ttccommunity.com.  Find me and friend me!  I am Maria!

Let's Start At The Beginning

Create your own banner at mybannermaker.com!
Well... almost the beginning.  I cannot believe it's been almost two weeks since I decided I wanted to chronicle our IVF journey as we go through it - and yet I've written nothing!  A lot of the "writer's block" I've been experiencing with this is where do you start the journey?  Clearly, most couples who come to the cross roads of IVF don't arrive here over night.  Most often, as is the case for us, the decision to move to InVitro Fertilization (IVF) is preceded by years of previous fertility treatments, procedures, various doctors, trial and error of old wives tales, alternative medicine attempts, and tests... oh the endless tests.  So as tempting as it is, the thought of backing this train up and writing about each stop over the last 3.5 years of trying for our little one is both impossible and so incredibly daunting it makes climbing Mount Everest seem like a more attainable goal for me - I think I'll just rewind to last month when we made the definitive decision to go forward with IVF, with a little cliff notes version of the 3.5 years that we will one day far far in the future, affectionately call "the trying to conceive years".  You can of course read more about our journey over the past few years on the main page of the blog.

On August 16th 2008, with tears of joy in my eyes, I took my best friend as my husband and wanted nothing more than to spend my life with him and one day see our children looking up at him with love and adoration soaking through them.  It was a specific moment on our wedding day that I'll never forget.  I remember looking at him, and thinking... "I can't believe he chose me!",  followed quickly by "He is going to be such an amazing father!"

Little did I know that the point between then and now would be followed by years of infertility, multiple miscarriages, two different Reproductive Endocrinologists (RE) on the East Coast, an MRI, an HSG, countless blood tests and scopes, seeing Naturopathic Doctors, and acupuncturists, a move across the country, meeting with yet another RE, telling the whole story all over again, learning I have endometriosis that had gone undiagnosed for years, another MRI, scheduled for surgery to cure endometriosis, learning that the surgery did not fix the endo, then to the decision to pull out the big guns and go for IVF.

Since moving to British Columbia, we are now with a phenomenal Reproductive Endocrinologist who we love!  The level of care between here and what we received on the east coast is literally worlds apart, and we're both certain we would have had no hopes of having children if we had staid in our previous city, with our previous doctors.  The doctor we are seeing now is rated as one of the top REs in Canada and it certainly shows.  We have made more progress here in B.C. in the last 6 months than we had in the entire 3 years prior.  As he works along side his wife and daughters in his clinic it is clear that family is what drives him to be so dedicated to his work.

On December 8th, 2011 I had a laparoscopy which we had thought would cure the endometriosis, along with a few other issues which have been interfering with our ability to get pregnant and stay pregnant.  Immediately after the surgery, hubby and I were over the moon that the issues which were getting in our way had been resolved and we could finally focus on baby - or so we thought.  The next morning the surgeon gave us the heartbreaking news that I have stage 4 endometriosis and they were unable to treat that level of endo laparoscopically.  With the help of my wonderful husband, I spent the next few weeks trying hard to heal from the physically and emotionally painful surgery.  We were given the choice of opting for another surgery which would have to be done via bikini cut (c-section cut) which may treat the endometriosis which may or may not help us get pregnant and stay pregnant, or bypass the ovaries and endometriosis all together and move forward with IVF - it's own personal rollercoaster within the rollercoaster of infertility.

Obviously, since I'm writing this, after a lot of soul searching, hard decision making, prayers, chatting with our doctors, and long talks with each other, hubby and I have decided to move forward with IVF.  It will be an interesting and rigorous journey I'm sure, with its own ups and downs.

For the past few years I've been very open, honest and downright public about our infertility journey, both with friends and family as well as on Up, Down & Natural  and Natural Parents Network - but always with a slight look back at how things have gone and what I have learned.  With our IVF journey, I plan to blog and chronicle this process as it happens.  It will be a rigorous journey, undoubtedly with tears, laughs, sighs of hopefulness and lots of baby day dreaming.  My goal is to, through our journey, be able to reach out to couples who are going through any form of Assisted Reproductive Therapy and if possible, break a little of the silence around infertility.

As Arpita and her husband enter their fourth year of trying to conceive their first child, she is trying to embrace the lessons the universe still has to teach her.  Arpita wears her heart on her sleeve on her blog, about trying to conceive both naturally as well as with medical help, as she and her husband are currently preparing for their first IVF Cycle.  Arpita writes to shed light on the infertility experience, natural parenting and everything and anything in mommy-world including easy recipes and loads of giveaways.  She blogs at Up, Down & Natural. Guest Post: Music and Magic

Create your own banner at mybannermaker.com!
My journey to motherhood began back in March of 2007, my father had just passed away a couple of weeks prior, and my husband and I decided that life was too short and why hold off trying to conceive any longer.  I finished off the last of my birth control pills and figured it would be a matter of just a couple of months before we'd get a positive pregnancy test.  I'm the oldest of 5 and my mom got pregnant twice on the pill, and she is one of 8, so I never imagined I'd have a hard time conceiving.  Boy was I wrong!  We tried for a year, and nothing, so we decided to bring it up at my well woman's visit with the doctor.  My dr. back then had been my dr. since birth, and couldn't believe with my family history, that I wasn't pregnant yet.  He ran a bunch of blood tests, and even ordered an MRI to check my pituitary gland, because I’d also been suffering from terrible headaches for a few months.  He also sent my husband home with a little cup, so he could submit a semen sample.  All tests came back normal for me, but my husband was so embarrassed  he waited 6 long months before finally working up the courage to go in., which was in August of 2008.  When the nurse called with the good news my husband was so happy, I think he would have hugged her if she was there, she said he had higher than average count, motility, and etc…  I had been listening in, but stopped at that point, because even though I was elated that we weren’t dealing with male factor infertility, my heart plummeted because I knew it WAS me then.  We decided to keep trying on our own until the end of the year, and if still not pg, we’d go in for a consult with the specialist.  The end of Dec. came, and I called to set up the appointment, the next available date would be March 12th, 2009, ironically this day also marked the two year anniversary of me going off the pill.  February came and I already hated the month, because it is when my dad was diagnosed with cancer, and passed away all within a couple of weeks,  just 2 years before.  Then this particular year, I had to get my wisdom teeth out, and then my husband announces on that same day that he is going to be getting laid off for a month.  I figured it couldn’t get any worse, and then my husband’s brother and his wife came out for a visit to my mother and father-in-laws, whom we share a driveway with.  My brother-in-law looked at me and said Happy Valentine’s day, your going to be an aunt.  I had to keep from bursting into tears!  February is such an emotional month anyways, and then to blurt out something like that, when they knew we’d been trying for almost 2yrs, was just too much, I had to keep biting my lip.  I then calmly asked if they were trying or if this was a surprise?  The said they got pregnant their first cycle trying.  I went home a couple of hours later and bawled my eyes out.  I was happy I was going to be an aunt, but I had to grieve for my situation too, little did I know what was to come.  About two weeks later I realized I was a week “late”, after my little sister stayed the night, our cycles have always been at the same time, and she actually noticed hers were the only “products” in the trash, and asked if I had something to tell her.  I thought maybe it had something to do with the stress of the month, but figured I’d take a test in a couple of days, when her and my brother went home.  If I was pg, I wanted it to only be my husband and I there when we got the news, and if I wasn’t I didn’t want my sister and brother there to see me fall to pieces.  The next day my mom and step-dad came out to pick the kids up, and my mom had this look of awe on her face.  She said, “Megan, while we were coming down your driveway (which is over a ¼ mile long) a sense of peace washed over me, and don’t ask me how I know this, it must have been the Lord, but you are going to have a baby in the next 10 months, and it is going to be a boy!”  I said whatever, and grabbed my sister and drug her in the next room, I asked her if she had mentioned to our mom that I was late, and she said no she hadn’t, and she was just as shocked as I was in regards to the story mom had just told.  Well neither one of us mentioned anything to our mom, and they left a little while later. I took at test at 2am the next morning, on March 2nd, and as soon as the pee hit it, it was blaringly positive!  I burst into tears, and ran to wake up my husband.  He jumped awake and asked what was wrong, and I just smiled and said, “Congrats Daddy!”  It took him a second to process what I just said, and then he looked at me like deer in headlights and asked me if I had just called him daddy?  I told him that I indeed had, and he jumped out of bed, hugged me and then asked if he could see the pee stick?  I had left it in the bathroom.  Needless to say, we were a little bit too pumped to go back to bed, and were chomping at the bit to tell someone our good news!  We started calling family at about 6am because we just couldn’t wait anymore. My mom screamed, and danced around according to my sisters, and then came back on the phone and told me that she told me so.  I went in later that morning to get a confirmation of pregnancy at the Dr. and then canceled my appointment with the specialist.  Fast forward to June, and my mom got to tell me she told me so again.  It WAS a BOY!! Danny Jay (named Danny after my dad) was born October 22nd, 2009, at 38 weeks 5days, and was 5 lbs 15oz, 19 ½ inches.  My water broke at 2am and he was born 11 and ½ hours later at 1:34pm, three days after his cousin.  We couldn’t be happier, and he is the love of our lives!

It is now two years later and we’ve been trying to conceive #2 since April 2011, just now going on 12 cycles.  As we once again go through all the testing, with no answers, I try to hold onto my faith, and remember that God gave us the perfect little person for us in His perfect timing last time, and if it is meant to be He will do so again.  While I’m waiting I’ll just enjoy the music of my son’s laughter and the magic of his smile!

Photos and Flashbacks!

Starting yesterday afternoon I started feeling really sick.  Last night at dinner, Gavin asked me why I was being so quiet since obviously that is not my usual.

I explained, "Mommy doesn't feel well tonight."

"What's hurting you, Mommy?" he asked in a very sincere tone.

"My throat is sore, Honey."

"What does 'Sor' mean?" he asked as if he was honestly trying to diagnose my condition.

"It means it hurts a little."

He looked me right in the eyes and said, "You know what I think will help you feel better?  Rest.  You need to get some rest and you will feel all better soon."

How sweet!  But here's the issue.  Not only am I not feeling well, I also have this to contend with!

This means I am ovulating!

So, I did turn in early but it was a Julia Roberts kind of night.  Remember these and these?  Last night it was...

It's Not Looking Good, Folks.

Yesterday I was hopeful.  I had a light line on my pregnancy test and I thought for sure that 13 days after my trigger shot there would be NO WAY that could be the trigger still.  Joke was on me.  My temperature is climbing back down toward the coverline on my chart, two negative tests, and the cramps setting in first thing this morning well... there is no denying where this is headed.

Last night I took a nice hot bath.  It was nice but I mentioned to Doug that one day I would love to have big, deep tub where I could soak comfortably.  His eye roll suggested that he was annoyed at my comment.  I asked him why and and he explained that there are so many expensive things on "the list" like needing a minivan.  I couldn't help but break down and cry.

"It isn't like we have any kids on the way so we don't need a new car."

I stood at the sink crying silent tears as I finished washing dishes.

I don't know why I was feeling so sure this cycle.  I don't know why I thought this was going to be a start instead of another end.  I know that God will bless me with another eventually I just need to be patient and thankful that he knows what is best for me and when it will be best for me.  I won't lie and say I haven't already calculated what my due date would be if I get pregnant next cycle.  I have and it has given me a little bit of a smile on this dismal and PMS filled day.  If I get pregnant this cycle I will be due just before my beloved grandmother's 100th birthday.  I would love, more than anything, to be due at such an important time as the matriarch of the family's century mark.  I can think of nothing more special.

So as I wait for the impending visit from that wretched Aunt that just can't seem to get off the invite list, I am planning for next cycle.  The wonderful people from Early-Pregnancy-Tests.com will be sending me an OvaCue fertility monitor so that I can optimize my chances this cycle!  I will also be using their supplement called FertileCM and Doug will be taking FertileAid for Men.  Maybe this will be our winning combination!

On a completely unrelated note: A friend of mine from what seems like a lifetime ago, gave birth to the most amazing, sweet, and handsome little man 8 weeks ago.  He has Down's Syndrome and is in heart failure and will be getting open heart surgery any day now.  Please keep Baby C. in your prayers for a quick and full recovery!

9 DPO is the Worst

Of all of the days of my cycle, 9 DPO (days past ovulation) is clearly the worst.  It is just on the eve of knowing if there is good news or not good news.  It is when signs of my period start sneaking in which, in the most annoying of ways, is a mirror image of the lists of early pregnancy symptoms I study every month.  A pinch, a cramp, an ache.  While easy to become obsessed with, they mean virtually nothing.  The only thing that means something is a line on a test.  A silly pink line.  That is the only thing that can tell me if those things I have been trying to ignore all day mean that my heart can begin to beat a little faster as I get excited about the possibilities of expanding our family.

I daydream the minutes away about what I'll do if I really am pregnant, but every daydream pops like a cartoon bubble when I remember how deflated I have felt the last 19 cycles.  I try to balance every thought of "Maybe!" with "Probably Not."  I don't know if it really makes it any easier but I at least feel like I am not letting myself get carried away.

This is also the time when Doug starts asking ab out tests.  Somehow Doug does a great job staying positive.  Every time.  Even after I have already resigned to using a preemptive pantiliner, he still gives me a premensrual pep talk.  I love him for it but it hurts when I feel like I am letting him down again.  "Negative.  It is still negative.  Maybe tomorrow."

I know that I should wait to test, but somehow I feel like testing early helps me to ease into the disappointment.  It is like when I was 16 years old and had a dream of a car for Christmas.  I wanted a shiny new car with a big red bow to be hiding in the garage.  I would open every gift one at a time hoping that it was a disguised car key or clue to where I would find some shiny new wheels.  Every gift was okay but it just wasn't a car.  Each day I'm alive is a wonderful gift and I appreciate that every month that passes puts me one month closer to a baby, but a new car would be really nice... I mean baby.  A new baby would be really nice.

Tomorrow I will be using a Detect5 test and I am really hoping to see a line.  Just one is fine.  One that tells me that there is a baby in there.  One line that tells me that it is time to shed a tear of fear wrapped in hope as women who have had losses will understand.  I want to try to fight the urge to fall in love right away.  I want to lose that battle just like I did every other time.  I want to start thinking about how old Gavin and Joey will be.  I want to guess what next fall will feel like.  I want to fall into a deep sleep each night because the hormones of pregnancy force my eyes closed.

I have said it before and I'll say it again to remind myself.  This life isn't about what I want.  It is what God wants for me.

That, my friends, is why 9 DPO is the worst.  Here's to tomorrow bringing me one step closer to doing the happy dance in my bathroom...

The Voices in My Head Tell Me I'm Crazy

I have a running dialogue going in my head all day long.  Sometimes it is just thinking about mundane errands I have to run.  Sometimes it is deep thoughts that may one day come together as a really good blog post.  Most days if you were in my head, it would sound something like this...

Yesterday at 9:00 am:

I really need to get some groceries.  Okay.  What are we going to have for dinners this week?  Hmmm... Wait!  Ouch!  Was that a pinch near my ovary?!  Crap!  That really hurt!  I wonder if it means anything.  Last cycle I think I felt the same thing and it meant nothing.  So... Italian subs sound good.  Maybe some Sausage Sandwiches with onions and green peppers?  I have the veggies so I'll just pick up some.... Crap!  Ouch!  That pinch thing just happened again!  Brush it off.  It is nothing!  So... buns.  Get some buns.

I pile the kids in the truck and we get on our way to the store.

Don't forget to pick up some cookie dough to bake cookies for Gavin's preschool class tomorrow.  Hmm... 20 kids.  Do I bake 2 dozen and each kid gets one or 4 dozen and each kid gets two and I get more left overs?  I don't need left overs.  I am gaining way too much weight lately.  Is that heartburn?  It hurts!  Ouch!  Totally too early for pregnancy symptoms.  I am only 6 dpo! But wow!  That is definitely heartburn!  So anyway... cookies.  Sugar or chocolate chip?  BURP Uh. Not heartburn.  Just gas.  But gas can be a symptom!  Only 6 dpo.  Stop it, Maria!

I arrive at the store.

I'll start with the non food stuff then come back and get the cold things.  Speaking of non food stuff... maybe I should pick up a box of pregnancy tests.  I DO have the Detect5 tests at home and really don't need more.  Must say no to pee sticks...  So I should make the cookies as soon as I get home.  I should have time to crank out 4 dozen cookies before lunch right?

I get home and unpack groceries.

I have to pee.  I'll unpack the groceries and then go to the bathroom.  Oooh!  I get to use another Detect5 test today to test out my trigger!  So exciting!  Must get food out of car.  Focus, Maria.  Now what on Earth is the Safelight guy doing here?  He isn't supposed to be here for another hour!  I feel weird peeing when there is a stranger outside my house putting in a windshield.  I mean I am sure I could pee and come back before anyone, even the boys, noticed I was gone but I want to use that test.  I'll wait a few minutes.  Maybe he'll be done soon.  On second thought, I'll just make it snappy.

I get the cup, the test, and head to the bathroom.

Hold the little cup carefully.  I hate when I get pee on my hands.  Slowly... slowly... but carefully set the pee cup on the floor while I unwrap the test.  What is that sound?  Is that a truck driving bast my bathroom window (a window that has no road anywhere near it)?  Hurry, Maria!  Oh, for the love of pee sticks!  I spilled my cup of pee.  Is there enough left in the cup?  None.  CRAP!  Am I really about to cry over spilled pee?  Maybe I am pregnant.  Wash hands well and repeatedly and then bake cookies.

I start baking cookies.

The theme of the day at preschool is the number 6.  Let me get out the mini MnMs and make little "6"s on each cookie.  How cute am I?  It won't even matter that the dough is coming out of a tub of pre made dough!  I mean, I am going with the theme of the day!  Why is Gavin acting so weird?  ***Editing out the gross part.  Just know that Gavin got sick.  Really really sick. ***  Great.  No one wants the sick kid's mom to bring in "homemade" cookies even if they are cute and have the number of the day on them.  There goes my diet.

I go to the grocery first thing in the morning to buy pretzels and raisins and take them to the preschool and tell them that Gavin won't be coming despite his begging, pleading, and promises to not get sick anymore.

Oh my goodness!  Am I getting teary eyed?  Seriously?!  I think I am crying about Gavin not coming to preschool today.  They have to think I am crazy!  I am a nut job!  Can I casually wipe my eyes without a tear falling or will they notice?  Deep breath.  No one can tell.  I'm sure they think I must have allergies because no grown woman would cry over this... unless... I am pregnant!  Maybe I am pregnant and I will be able to share with them 3 months from now that I am pregnant and THAT was why I was a basket case over a stupid snack day and a stomach bug!  Wouldn't that be nice?!  Now focus and get your weepy butt out of here before the other moms notice.

Am I alone?  Do you talk to yourself too?  Would you cry over spilled pee and 4 dozen chocolate chip cookies with "6"s on them?
