About Me
- Maria
- God has blessed me tremendously with an amazing husband, Doug, and two gorgeous little boys, Gavin and Joey. It has always been a dream of mine to have a large family but God may have other plans. I had a series of 6 consecutive early miscarriages when trying for baby #2. We are currently trying for baby #3 after our 7th miscarriage. I am faithful that God's plan is perfect, even when I am not happy about it. I love comments and meeting new followers so please don't be shy!

Which Way?
I am in my 20th cycle of trying to conceive my 3rd child. You know, when I first started trying this time around, if you would have told me that I wouldn't be sporting a big round baby bump by now I would have laughed at you.
We tried 3 rounds of clomid with a trigger. Nothing good came of that unless you count a really emotional roller coaster of hope with long lingering HCG and false positives. I spent way too much time watching people get congratulated over and over again about how there would be no way for a trigger to be showing up 13 days later. I love being in the 1%... all the time.
So this is our first cycle of going au natural again. I was pleasantly surprised to see this on day 13.
Now fast forward to yesterday. I had a little dip in my temperature. Now, while to many who never charted, I might sound a little crazy, but when I am 7 days past ovulation and my temp does something a little erratic, I can't help but get a little hopeful. A dip can mean good things if the temp bounces back up. Last night I was so excited to see if my morning temperature was going to make me smile. Then, this morning, my temp did more than make me smile. It made me gasp. It jumped clear up to 99.0 degrees. That was almost a whole degree higher than yesterday. I thought for sure it couldn't be real. I took my temp again. 99.2 Then again about 30 minutes later. 99.1 Then an hour later. 99.1 Then this afternoon after going shopping, eating lunch, feeling healthy with the exception of a horrible headache. 99.1
I know that it could mean nothing. I know I could just be getting a touch of something. But here I am somewhere between..

Then just to make matters worse, I have a horrible headache. I often get headaches when I don't get enough caffeine. Hello. My name is Maria and I am a caffeine addict. But today I have had a cup of coffee and a soda. I should not be going through withdrawal. Then this morning, as I wiped my nose, it started gushing blood. I get it. It is the middle of winter. The air is dry. Nosebleeds aren't unheard of for me. But why, oh why does it also have to be a potential pregnancy symptom?! Probably because no matter where I am in my cycle, I can always find this street...

Let's Start At The Beginning
Well... almost the beginning. I cannot believe it's been almost two weeks since I decided I wanted to chronicle our IVF journey as we go through it - and yet I've written nothing! A lot of the "writer's block" I've been experiencing with this is where do you start the journey? Clearly, most couples who come to the cross roads of IVF don't arrive here over night. Most often, as is the case for us, the decision to move to InVitro Fertilization (IVF) is preceded by years of previous fertility treatments, procedures, various doctors, trial and error of old wives tales, alternative medicine attempts, and tests... oh the endless tests. So as tempting as it is, the thought of backing this train up and writing about each stop over the last 3.5 years of trying for our little one is both impossible and so incredibly daunting it makes climbing Mount Everest seem like a more attainable goal for me - I think I'll just rewind to last month when we made the definitive decision to go forward with IVF, with a little cliff notes version of the 3.5 years that we will one day far far in the future, affectionately call "the trying to conceive years". You can of course read more about our journey over the past few years on the main page of the blog.
On August 16th 2008, with tears of joy in my eyes, I took my best friend as my husband and wanted nothing more than to spend my life with him and one day see our children looking up at him with love and adoration soaking through them. It was a specific moment on our wedding day that I'll never forget. I remember looking at him, and thinking... "I can't believe he chose me!", followed quickly by "He is going to be such an amazing father!"
Little did I know that the point between then and now would be followed by years of infertility, multiple miscarriages, two different Reproductive Endocrinologists (RE) on the East Coast, an MRI, an HSG, countless blood tests and scopes, seeing Naturopathic Doctors, and acupuncturists, a move across the country, meeting with yet another RE, telling the whole story all over again, learning I have endometriosis that had gone undiagnosed for years, another MRI, scheduled for surgery to cure endometriosis, learning that the surgery did not fix the endo, then to the decision to pull out the big guns and go for IVF.
Since moving to British Columbia, we are now with a phenomenal Reproductive Endocrinologist who we love! The level of care between here and what we received on the east coast is literally worlds apart, and we're both certain we would have had no hopes of having children if we had staid in our previous city, with our previous doctors. The doctor we are seeing now is rated as one of the top REs in Canada and it certainly shows. We have made more progress here in B.C. in the last 6 months than we had in the entire 3 years prior. As he works along side his wife and daughters in his clinic it is clear that family is what drives him to be so dedicated to his work.
On December 8th, 2011 I had a laparoscopy which we had thought would cure the endometriosis, along with a few other issues which have been interfering with our ability to get pregnant and stay pregnant. Immediately after the surgery, hubby and I were over the moon that the issues which were getting in our way had been resolved and we could finally focus on baby - or so we thought. The next morning the surgeon gave us the heartbreaking news that I have stage 4 endometriosis and they were unable to treat that level of endo laparoscopically. With the help of my wonderful husband, I spent the next few weeks trying hard to heal from the physically and emotionally painful surgery. We were given the choice of opting for another surgery which would have to be done via bikini cut (c-section cut) which may treat the endometriosis which may or may not help us get pregnant and stay pregnant, or bypass the ovaries and endometriosis all together and move forward with IVF - it's own personal rollercoaster within the rollercoaster of infertility.
Obviously, since I'm writing this, after a lot of soul searching, hard decision making, prayers, chatting with our doctors, and long talks with each other, hubby and I have decided to move forward with IVF. It will be an interesting and rigorous journey I'm sure, with its own ups and downs.
For the past few years I've been very open, honest and downright public about our infertility journey, both with friends and family as well as on Up, Down & Natural and Natural Parents Network - but always with a slight look back at how things have gone and what I have learned. With our IVF journey, I plan to blog and chronicle this process as it happens. It will be a rigorous journey, undoubtedly with tears, laughs, sighs of hopefulness and lots of baby day dreaming. My goal is to, through our journey, be able to reach out to couples who are going through any form of Assisted Reproductive Therapy and if possible, break a little of the silence around infertility.

Do you see it?
When I was pregnant with Gavin, I was eager to pick out nursery decor. I managed to restrain myself until after I learned that he was a boy so that I could choose a gender specific theme. I had a really hard time choosing but finally decided on a theme that was called "Antique Toys." It was classic looking and very masculine and I loved it. There was a quilt, sheets, and crib skirt that had pictures of boats, cars, trucks, planes, footballs, baseballs, mitts, and bats. I splurged and bought the lamp, laundry hamper, valences and wall art. I clicked order now and waited for its arrival.
A few days later, I came home to a large package and couldn't wait to tear it open, wash it and start putting the room together! I took out the bedding and admired my choice. Then I pulled out the wall art pictures and glanced at each of the three pictures. Each one was a picture of a thing and the name of the item was written in script font underneath. There is a car, a plane, and a truck. So cute right?

And then closer...
Still don't see what I'm talking about?
Please tell me that I am the only one who doesn't see the word truck! As if it wasn't bad enough, it looked the exact same on the valences, the lamp, and the hamper. My first born son's room was decorated in F-bombs. Still is actually. I had better take them down before he gets any better at reading.

Fertility Friday- A Little Bit of TTC Fun
| Tweet |
If you have ever tried to get pregnant and it took a little longer than you expected, you can probably admit to some of these. How many will you own up to?
You have cringed, thought about speaking nasty words, and/or responded through clenched teeth to the words, "Just relax and it will happen," "Get drunk! That's how it happened for us!" or "It will happen when you quit trying."
You have calculated the exact angle your hips should be in to help the swimmers to be pointed in the right direction. You have considered or even implemented handstands in the bedroom after the evenings events.
You have sipped on teas, swallowed supplements, eaten things that otherwise would be considered inedible all with the hopes of getting a better ovulation, improving implantation, or increasing chances of pregnancy.
You can read the next sentences without any issues: If you are done TTA and are ready to TTC and get your BFP, first you need to determine your O using a BBT. You should start BD EOD and then when you see EWCM you should BD daily. When in the TWW is is best if you wait to POAS until at least 9DPO. Good luck!
You can count on one hand your family or friends who have had a hard time getting pregnant but you need all of your fingers and and some of your toes to rattle off who is currently pregnant or who just had a baby in the last 12 months.
You bathroom is most likely fully stocked with pee sticks of varying brands. While most people think peeing is just a bodily function, you consider it a fact finding mission.
Examining toilet paper is not only uncommon, it would be completely irresponsible to just wipe and flush without inspection.
You may have been lucky enough to find some other ladies who are traveling this road with you and asking them about their cervical mucus is said in the same breath as, "What are you making for dinner?"
You have mastered the perfect technique for photographing pregnancy test. You know how to use the macro setting, upload it, crop it, then tweak that photo until you can't see straight. All in the name of capturing a teeny little possibility of a pregnancy!
You have had to resist the urge to put this as your facebook status: "So excited that I found the best EWCM ever!" Because sometimes this is honestly more status worthy than your other random daily happenings. I mean really what is more exciting, "Boiling hot dogs." or "I have gobs of fertile CM today!"
Okay... Maybe I went to far with the last one!
I have posted before about how blessed I have been when it comes to support while I am on this journey. As a result, I was inspired to work on a very special site that I am excited to announce is now open to everyone!
www.ttccommunity.com is a place for people on the spectrum of trying to conceive, pregnancy, managing a loss or losses, and/or parenting. While the forums might seem like the most recognizable feature, the community might be your best asset! You may start a group or join an open group. You might find people that are on this journey too that might be able to commiserate, support and understand you better than you could have imagined. Also, for those of you who might have a collection of pictures of various pee sticks, please submit them to the gallery. Once we get more pictures in there, I think that will be a wonderful tool (or point of obsession) soon. Also, those of you who chart, please share those in the chart gallery. Again, once we have a nice gallery, people will be able to search and find exactly what they were looking for!
Attention bloggers: if you have a blog you are invited to add your blog to the directory! It can help other people find their way to you especially if you have a common thread!
Please know that this is just getting off the ground and while there might be wrinkles along the way, I am very excited to get to know you all better and be able to better able support one another. See you there!

Guest Post: Music and Magic

My journey to motherhood began back in March of 2007, my father had just passed away a couple of weeks prior, and my husband and I decided that life was too short and why hold off trying to conceive any longer. I finished off the last of my birth control pills and figured it would be a matter of just a couple of months before we'd get a positive pregnancy test. I'm the oldest of 5 and my mom got pregnant twice on the pill, and she is one of 8, so I never imagined I'd have a hard time conceiving. Boy was I wrong! We tried for a year, and nothing, so we decided to bring it up at my well woman's visit with the doctor. My dr. back then had been my dr. since birth, and couldn't believe with my family history, that I wasn't pregnant yet. He ran a bunch of blood tests, and even ordered an MRI to check my pituitary gland, because I’d also been suffering from terrible headaches for a few months. He also sent my husband home with a little cup, so he could submit a semen sample. All tests came back normal for me, but my husband was so embarrassed he waited 6 long months before finally working up the courage to go in., which was in August of 2008. When the nurse called with the good news my husband was so happy, I think he would have hugged her if she was there, she said he had higher than average count, motility, and etc… I had been listening in, but stopped at that point, because even though I was elated that we weren’t dealing with male factor infertility, my heart plummeted because I knew it WAS me then. We decided to keep trying on our own until the end of the year, and if still not pg, we’d go in for a consult with the specialist. The end of Dec. came, and I called to set up the appointment, the next available date would be March 12th, 2009, ironically this day also marked the two year anniversary of me going off the pill. February came and I already hated the month, because it is when my dad was diagnosed with cancer, and passed away all within a couple of weeks, just 2 years before. Then this particular year, I had to get my wisdom teeth out, and then my husband announces on that same day that he is going to be getting laid off for a month. I figured it couldn’t get any worse, and then my husband’s brother and his wife came out for a visit to my mother and father-in-laws, whom we share a driveway with. My brother-in-law looked at me and said Happy Valentine’s day, your going to be an aunt. I had to keep from bursting into tears! February is such an emotional month anyways, and then to blurt out something like that, when they knew we’d been trying for almost 2yrs, was just too much, I had to keep biting my lip. I then calmly asked if they were trying or if this was a surprise? The said they got pregnant their first cycle trying. I went home a couple of hours later and bawled my eyes out. I was happy I was going to be an aunt, but I had to grieve for my situation too, little did I know what was to come. About two weeks later I realized I was a week “late”, after my little sister stayed the night, our cycles have always been at the same time, and she actually noticed hers were the only “products” in the trash, and asked if I had something to tell her. I thought maybe it had something to do with the stress of the month, but figured I’d take a test in a couple of days, when her and my brother went home. If I was pg, I wanted it to only be my husband and I there when we got the news, and if I wasn’t I didn’t want my sister and brother there to see me fall to pieces. The next day my mom and step-dad came out to pick the kids up, and my mom had this look of awe on her face. She said, “Megan, while we were coming down your driveway (which is over a ¼ mile long) a sense of peace washed over me, and don’t ask me how I know this, it must have been the Lord, but you are going to have a baby in the next 10 months, and it is going to be a boy!” I said whatever, and grabbed my sister and drug her in the next room, I asked her if she had mentioned to our mom that I was late, and she said no she hadn’t, and she was just as shocked as I was in regards to the story mom had just told. Well neither one of us mentioned anything to our mom, and they left a little while later. I took at test at 2am the next morning, on March 2nd, and as soon as the pee hit it, it was blaringly positive! I burst into tears, and ran to wake up my husband. He jumped awake and asked what was wrong, and I just smiled and said, “Congrats Daddy!” It took him a second to process what I just said, and then he looked at me like deer in headlights and asked me if I had just called him daddy? I told him that I indeed had, and he jumped out of bed, hugged me and then asked if he could see the pee stick? I had left it in the bathroom. Needless to say, we were a little bit too pumped to go back to bed, and were chomping at the bit to tell someone our good news! We started calling family at about 6am because we just couldn’t wait anymore. My mom screamed, and danced around according to my sisters, and then came back on the phone and told me that she told me so. I went in later that morning to get a confirmation of pregnancy at the Dr. and then canceled my appointment with the specialist. Fast forward to June, and my mom got to tell me she told me so again. It WAS a BOY!! Danny Jay (named Danny after my dad) was born October 22nd, 2009, at 38 weeks 5days, and was 5 lbs 15oz, 19 ½ inches. My water broke at 2am and he was born 11 and ½ hours later at 1:34pm, three days after his cousin. We couldn’t be happier, and he is the love of our lives!
It is now two years later and we’ve been trying to conceive #2 since April 2011, just now going on 12 cycles. As we once again go through all the testing, with no answers, I try to hold onto my faith, and remember that God gave us the perfect little person for us in His perfect timing last time, and if it is meant to be He will do so again. While I’m waiting I’ll just enjoy the music of my son’s laughter and the magic of his smile!
Thank you so much to Megan for this amazing and touching post. I feel like I shared all of your ups and downs and admire your strength and your message. I needed this reminder.. especially now.

Photos and Flashbacks!
Starting yesterday afternoon I started feeling really sick. Last night at dinner, Gavin asked me why I was being so quiet since obviously that is not my usual.I explained, "Mommy doesn't feel well tonight."
"What's hurting you, Mommy?" he asked in a very sincere tone.
"My throat is sore, Honey."
"What does 'Sor' mean?" he asked as if he was honestly trying to diagnose my condition.
"It means it hurts a little."
He looked me right in the eyes and said, "You know what I think will help you feel better? Rest. You need to get some rest and you will feel all better soon."
How sweet! But here's the issue. Not only am I not feeling well, I also have this to contend with!

A Journey Into Faith and Family
Mamma Homemaker has a wonderful blog that has tons of fun giveaways, reviews and helpful information for busy mothers everywhere! Plus she is totally a sweetheart who always seems to be able to have just the right words. I am so thankful that she has shared her story and excited to be able to follow her journey to become a mother! August 22, 2009, It was a beautiful late summer afternoon. My family drove in from NJ to be a part of one of the most important days of my life. At three o'clock that afternoon I became Mrs. Maria Briggs. I also became an instant mom. It was wonderful! My husband has three beautiful boys whom I adore. There is no greater love than that of a mother's for her children, but there is definitely something more here. We're a blended family and to make a bond is difficult but with faith and love we accomplished that. Of course like every newly wed couple we wanted to immediately add to our wonderful family. We were hoping it would happen while on our honeymoon. No such luck.

| One of the happiest days of my life |
August 2, 2011, It was again a late summer day. It was a Tuesday. I had been feeling “off” for a couple of weeks, and couldn't understand why. I had an extra HPT in my bathroom closet and being the addict that I am I immediately peed on it just out of sheer curiosity. The whole time I'm praying, please God let this be a positive, please, oh please. I found myself staring at it, for what seemed like an eternity. I saw the little box go from white, to one blue line, and then two blue lines! Yes two! It was light, but it was there! I was elated, thrilled, scared, in disbelief. I immediately called my husband, took a picture of it, sent it to his phone. We were thrilled! I prayed that night that this was it, that this was our one. Month after month of waiting, expecting, hoping this will be the one, can definitely take its toll on you, not only mentally, but physically as well, and mostly emotionally.
The elation didn't last. No it was too good to be true. On Wednesday I called to make an appointment at the OB/GYN. That same night I felt a cramp. My friend told me that it was normal. On Thursday I woke up, I thought I had wet myself, I rush to the bathroom, and I had bled through. That “cycle” was the longest I've ever had. I bled for 10 days. I didn't see a lot of clotting, but that was probably because I refused to look. I was just in total disbelief. When I called to cancel the appointment, the nurse or receptionist there told me, “Oh I guess it was a false positive, maybe it just wasn't meant to be this time, call us when you have another positive, but wait first in case you bleed again.” Yes I have been able to quote this word for word. Those words are etched into my brain. It was the coldest and meanest thing I had ever heard in my life. I prayed that I would get through this, that we would get through this. For the first time since my husband and I had been together, I found him praying. I knew then that this was important to him too. I knew that as long as we had faith in God and in each other that we would get through this together.
We had a long talk and decided to just stop thinking about it for a while. To just let it happen and if by the end of December, still no baby, we would make an appointment with a Reproductive Endocrinologist. Well December 2011 came and almost went. Another cycle another waiting period and nothing. I picked up the phone, sweaty, clammy hands, heart beating so fast I thought for sure it would come out of my chest, and dialed the number for the RE.
January 6, 2012 I find myself and my husband sitting in the RE's waiting room. I see a total of 5 pregnant women, all absolutely glowing, some of them showed some fear on their faces. All of them with their husbands or partners. I felt relieved for some reason. I finally got to see the wonderful RE and after talking for about an hour or so, and a brief exam, she ordered a battalion of tests. All of which I was more than happy to do. I find on on January 27th. I am praying for news that will be helpful and productive an allowing us to complete our journey. We have the faith, and this family is waiting for that little angel to bless us even more.
